Band Easter Celebration
Our first performance of the year for all the bands. Moreover, it is the very special first performance by the new Training Band. The Concert is held before school towards the end of Term 1, with an Easter egg raffle for parents and students. A fun morning for everyone.
Training Band Sunday workshop. This workshop is usually held on the school grounds on a Sunday in May (usually 9am to 3pm), to polish musical performance in the lead up to the Yamaha festival.
A two day camp for Intermediate, Concert and Performing Band members at an external location (usually Galston Gorge). It is held to polish performances ahead of the Yamaha festival. For the past 2 years the camp has been held during the school week, with support and supervision from some WPS school teachers. Band Camp is undoubtedly a highlight for our more senior bands, and is often the first camp away from home for many students.
The UNSW Music Festival
Traditionally, this music festival is our main competitive performance during the year. This festival, held locally over the month of August, attracts a very large participation from hundreds of primary and high schools, plus community bands. Our school has a long and proud tradition at this festival and is regularly awarded silver and prestigious gold awards for very high musical standards.
Our annual school concert is traditionally held at the end of Term 3. All bands perform individually, and in a big combined finale. Ensemble groups such as jazz and trash percussion also showcase our Year 6 students – who have dedicated many hours of before school rehearsals over the past 4 years – are on the concert program. Teachers can also provide a surprise performance as well, which is often seen as a highlight by the children.
End of year Christmas concerts
These are performed separately by each band, usually on the last rehearsal morning for the year. They provide an opportunity for students to play at a final festive performance for family and friends. It is a relaxed event where the students often dress with a Christmas flavour and some students choose to give a brief solo performance.
Performance opportunities within the school
These also exist, and include performances at Anzac Day, Education Day, Grandparents’ Day and Presentation Day and as well as various other school concerts and assemblies during the year.
External performances and excursions
Our bands have also performed with the Willoughby Brass Band at the Zenith Theatre, Willoughby City Council Spring Festival Street Fair, Castle Cove Primary School Jazz Festival, the Concourse, Chatswood High School Term Concert, and have held a workshop with Killarney High School. Whilst most of these external events are for our senior Concert and Performing Band, we also explore some visits to local venues, such as pre-schools, for our more junior bands. An excursion for the Intermediate, Concert and Performing Band to the Sydney Symphony Education series is also organised.
